Amateurism Certification

Accepting prize money above actual and necessary expenses, signing with an agent, or playing on a team with paid professionals can jeopardize amateur status. The rules differ slightly between divisions, so athletes with any professional contact should get clarity early.
The NIL (name, image, and likeness) era has changed the landscape — college athletes can now earn compensation for their name, image, and likeness without losing amateur status — but high school athletes should understand that state high school association rules and future college eligibility rules can still be affected by NIL activity. Families should check current rules before any NIL engagement.
