    NCAA Eligibility Center

The NCAA Eligibility Center is the organization that certifies whether a high school athlete meets the academic and amateurism requirements to compete at an NCAA Division I or Division II school. Athletes must register, submit transcripts and test scores, and receive a final certification before they can play.

Registration typically happens junior year of high school. The Eligibility Center reviews core-course completion, GPA, and amateur status to issue a final decision. Athletes planning to compete at the NCAA Division I or II level should create an Eligibility Center account early so any missing core courses or academic gaps can be addressed before senior year.

Division III athletes do not need to register with the Eligibility Center — eligibility is certified by each institution directly. NAIA athletes register with a separate body, the NAIA Eligibility Center, and NJCAA eligibility is handled by each two-year college.

The certification process has two parts: an academic review (core courses, GPA, and test scores against the sliding scale) and an amateurism review (confirming the athlete has not accepted payment or signed a professional contract that would void amateur status). Both must be cleared before competition.

A common mistake is assuming a high overall GPA satisfies the requirement. The NCAA only counts approved core courses — not every class on a transcript — so an athlete with a strong overall GPA can still fall short if too few of those credits come from NCAA-approved core courses. Families should verify their high school's approved course list on the Eligibility Center website early.

The Eligibility Center charges a registration fee, with fee waivers available for families who qualify. Final certification is issued after graduation once final transcripts are received, so athletes are not fully cleared until the summer after senior year.
