Full Ride Scholarship
A full ride scholarship covers the full cost of attendance — tuition, room, board, books, and required fees. Full rides are rare and are only available in head-count sports, which are limited to a few high-revenue sports at Division I.
Only Division I head-count sports (football, men's and women's basketball, women's gymnastics, volleyball, and tennis) offer guaranteed full rides. In every other sport, scholarships are split among teammates as partial awards.
Most athletes in equivalency sports receive partial scholarships that are split among teammates. A 'full ride' in an equivalency sport is possible but uncommon, and usually reflects a coach choosing to concentrate a large share of the budget on one player.
Because full rides are so scarce, families should approach recruiting with realistic expectations about athletic aid. The total financial aid package — athletic plus academic plus need-based — is what determines affordability, not the athletic portion alone.
The distinction between head-count and equivalency sports is why two athletes with similar ability can receive very different offers: one in a head-count sport might get a full ride, while one in an equivalency sport gets a 30% award. Understanding which category your sport falls into sets the right expectation.
